Self-Assessment (Beijing Mandarin Learning Scale)

The Beijing Mandarin Learning Scale has referred to our Mandarin Chinese curriculum which is divided into two learning categories: listening and speaking (L & S), and reading, comprehension, and writing(R&C&W).

 

By going through it and ticking the box that best shows your level in listening speaking (L & S) and reading writing (R&C&W), it will determine your BM Chinese language level. And you will be presented with a suggested Mandarin Chinese starting level in those two categories.

 

Expert Level Nine

L & S You can use a full range of language with proficiency approaching that in your own mother tongue.
R&C&W You can recognize and pronounce more than 3000 Chines characters and know their meaning well. You can read and comprehend articles freely and can write well-organized articles freely.
Proficient Level Eight
(18,19,20)
Very Well
L & S You can use a very wide range of language effectively and with confidence in all situations.
R&C&W You can recognize and pronounce 1500-2500 Chines characters and know their meaning well. You can read daily articles freely, understand the context and the meaning, and learn new words. You can write articles such as diary, narration, portrayal, and critical reasoning articles with good content arrangement and without obvious errors.
Advanced Level Seven
(15, 16, 17)
Good
L & S You can use a wide range of language with confidence in all but the most demanding situations.
R&C&W You can recognize and pronounce 1000-1500 Chinese Characters and know their meaning well. You can read and understand articles for primary 6 or above students. You can write logical and critical reasoning articles in around 400 Chinese characters with few obvious errors.
Intermediate High Level Six

L & S You can use a good range of language effectively for all practical needs and public conversations with limited confidence in demanding situations.
R&C&W You can recognize and pronounce 700-1000 Chinese characters and know their meaning well. You can read and understand articles for primary 4-5. You know how to compose articles based on Chinese literary forms. You can write logical articles in around 400 Chinese characters with a few obvious errors.
Intermediate Level Five
(9, 10, 11)
Moderate
L & S You can use a satisfactory range of language effectively for all practical needs and personal conversations.
R&C&W You can recognize and pronounce 400-700 Chinese characters and know their meaning. You can read articles and storybooks for primary 3-4 students. You can form phrases and sentences skillfully with the right, meaningful expressions. You know the basic Chinese literary form. You can write logical stories and notes in around 200 Chinese characters.
Intermediate Lower Level Four
(6, 7, 8)
Limited
L & S You can use a moderate range of language, sufficient for most practical needs and personal conversation.
R&C&W You know most of the Chinese radicals. You can recognize and pronounce 200-400 Chinese characters and know their meaning. You can read and understand textbooks for primary 1-2
students. You can form phrases and short sentences with characters with desired expressions.
You can write short articles in around 100 characters with the proper connection between the lines although there are some sentence structure or grammar mistakes.
Elementary High  Level Three

Very Limited
L & S You can use a limited range of language, sufficient for everyday practical needs.
R&C&W You know Chinese radicals well which are frequently used. You can recognize and pronounce 130-200 Chinese characters and know their meaning. You can read primary 1 or pre-school storybooks. You have some knowledge about forming phrases and sentences. You can write short notes with 30-50 Chinese characters in independent sentences and with connections in between.
Elementary Level Two

L & S You can use a simple range of language, sufficient for basic everyday practical needs.
R&W You can recognize the basic Chinese radicals. You can recognize and pronounce 70-130 Chinese characters and know their meaning. You can read the toddlers’ books in words. You can write full and independent sentences with more than 10 characters.
Beginner   Level One

L & S You can use a few words or phrases such as common greetings, and self-introduction.
R&W You can recognize the basic strokes. You can recognize and pronounce 30-60 Chinese characters and know their meaning. You can write around 30 Chinese characters or simple
sentences within 10 characters.
Complete Beginner  Level Zero
L & S You have no knowledge of Mandarin.
R&W Never meet Chinese characters.
